I’m in the midst of buying a boat on Tortola. I’d like to stay in a marina during the winter season…for 5 or 6 months. Is there a length of stay cut off? Do I need to fill out an application…since it’s longer that 28 days. I will not be working.

Thank you.

Good morning,

Once you are down here as a tourist, you will need to keep applying for an extension from immigration beyond the 28 days. Typically this is only good for three months, but it is possible for people to reside on boats for an extended period of time; however, this is up to BVI Immigration to decide. You may need to provide official documentation such as bank statements and account balances in order to prove that you are visiting here with the means to fund yourself and will not need to work during this time. This is in order to prevent visitors working illegally chartering or renting their boat and violating laws of the labour department.

Hope this helps!
